THE USSC ABORTION DECISION
While we have seen only a draft of the decision likely to be handed down in a month or so, the expectation is that the court will overturn Roe v. Wade. My talk will describe the developments in this area of the law over the last quarter of the 20th century in Canada and the United States that led to the liberalization of abortion laws. I would then review the USSC judgment in Dobbs and its implications for future developments concerning abortion laws as well as other possible constitutional ramifications from the Dobbs decision.
Tuesday, July 26 at 10:00 am
GENOCIDE IN UKRAINE
I would start my discussion with a brief history of the development of the legal concept of genocide and the adoption of the Genocide Convention by the UN in the middle of the 20th century. I would review the Convention and Canada's enactment of the Convention's principles into Canadian law. Finally, I would consider whether Russia's actions in the war in Ukraine constitute the crime of genocide.
